Are YOU Smoking What You're Selling?

Greetings my fellow Americans! "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what YOU can do for your country." haha. That's not what my post is about. Just thought it would be something funny to share since I started the post off addressing you as my fellow Americans. Our 5th grade teacher made us write that quote 50 times for everytime we said "yeah" instead of "yes." Needless to say, I will never forget that quote.

Anyway....what my post is really about. The topic Pastor Corey chose for youth service on Wednesday night was "Are You Selling What You're Smoking?" He compared our Christian walk with selling drugs. Pretty hilarious! It was an excellent sermon. So, I will give you some points he went over for something to think about over the weekend :) For now, pretend that you're a drug dealer. Wow... That sounds so wrong! But do it.
*please note that these are not my own words, some are, but I am sharing what Pastor Corey shared with us.

*If we hope to get other people hooked, which is our main responsibility, we have to be hooked ourselves. -Like everyone who does Atkins- you have to believe in your product.

*Addiction-- Are you addicted to God?
-"Nic fits"- Can you tell when you have gone too long without spending time with God?
-Smokers have tell tale signs.

An example of "someone who was not smoking"...
David and Bathsheeba. If you do not know what this story is about, I encourage you to read 2nd Samuel 11:1-5, as I don't really want to explain ....sorry!
It mentions that David got out of bed late in the afternoon after taking a nap...which shows that sometimes we allow ourselves to get distracted and lazy, and it becomes easy to lose our focus!, etc. He did other bad things, but you'll have to read the story to know.

An example of "someone who WAS smoking"
"He was blameless, a man of complete integrity. Job feared God and stayed away from evil."
-Just like addicts stay away from the police, we should stay away from evil!!

I think this next verse is so SWEET!
Job 1:21 "He said, 'I came naked from my mother's womb, and I will be stripped of everything when I die. The Lord gave me everything I had, and the Lord as taken away. Priase the name of the Lord!"

Okay I don't know about you guys, but if everything I had was taken away from me.."Praise the name of the Lord" would probably not be the first thing I thought about or said. I think that is amazing that he said that!

-To say something like that, you have to be smoking something. It just doesn't fit.

How do you know if you're smokin'?
*You genuinely care about others and their eternal destination.
*You are the same person everywhere you go.
*You spend time everday getting your "God fix" (pray, Bible fast, worship, tell others)
*You invite people to youth group & other events
*You push past your fears and talk to people about Jesus
*You do things you know you are supposed to do, even when you don't feel like it. It's not faking if you're not in the mood, it's disciplining yourself because you know it is the right thing to do!

So I'll leave this thought with you....

Are you smoking what you're selling????

Have a great weekend everyone!

Home is Where the Friends are

Well, I spent this past weekend in my wonderful hometown, Hibbing. I had a blast hanging out with everyone!!! It was so wonderful seeing everyone and reminiscing like old times. My cousin Stacy told me that the first "homecoming" was the hardest. At first I didn't really believe her because I thought for sure the very first time you left home would be the hardest. Now I know she was telling the truth. I didn't think it would be so hard to leave everyone again. It was. I was saddened after having so much fun there and knowing I had to return to a town that I don't really have any friends (yet). Different thoughts like "Maybe I should move back to Hibbing" were running through my head. But, I remembered that God put me in Austin for a purpose, so I just have to trust in Him and remember that He is here for me through hard and sad times such as now. Plus, it's not like I can't ever visit again! Hope all the "homecomings" aren't as hard as this one was. I've been told they get easier! I have one special request: that maybe you could squeeze in a prayer for me to adjust to life in Austin and that I would meet new friends. I would greatly appreciate it!
Anyway, on a happier note. My weekend consisted of

Wednesday: I left Austin at 2:55pm and arrived in Hibbing at 7:40pm. I drove non-stop and went straight to the church where I surprised everyone!!! It was so very tempting to tell everyone that I was coming home Wednesday instead of Friday, but, I'm glad it was a surprise. It made my homecoming much more fun :) After socializing with everyone after church I went to Sammy's with Kranny, Jamie, Violet, Jaci, Ryan, Brooke, Chris, Jason, and Steph. We saw Reid and a bunch of other N/Kians and found out that Reid won homecoming! Congrats to him!

Thursday: Chelsea was kind enough to invite me over for lunch. She made my favorite meal!!! Spaghetti and meatballs (yes Brianna, Stacy, and Shannon......that IS my favorite meal :P). Shaleah and Amarah also joined us! That was very fun. Thanks Chels for the DELICIOUS lunch!! :) After that we went to the homecoming coronation where we met Mrs. Willy and the Pearson parents! It was exciting seeing Alex C. crowned homecoming king!!! Congrats to him also :) Then, Mrs Willy brought me to my car after it was done getting an oil change. I then went back to the school to pick up Thronson. She, Brooke, and I hung out for a little while. Then we picked up Sydney and Doug (Mark P) and met Jessie and Brittany at Kari's tennis match! Good job Kari for winning both matches :D The rest of the day consisted of going to Taco John's for dinner, and going to Jason's to see his dogs.

Friday: Lunch at the Pearsons! Molly, Chris, Andrew, Jason, Brittany, Natalie, Chelsea, and I had some Dominos pizza and garlic bread.....YUM! Thanks to the Pearsons for letting us come over! Then after school I picked up Jessie, Jason, Brooke, and Jenni and went through the car wash. Fun times I tell ya. Later on we went to the Bluejacket football game. Good job at being quarterback, Jason! That was a lot of fun. Tons of people went to cheer the team on. We then went to "Lil Ruth's" for a bonfire. That was also tons of fun!!

Saturday: Went to a meeting to help plan Prom Alternative (you all better go!), then helped do some sanding and painting at the Coffee House. Then, helped with a garbage pick-up and had more pizza. Later on we went to the Reini's to watch a movie. After the movie we played various games. Following the games, we went for a walk. Thanks Reini's!

Sunday: Church! Afterwards a bunch of us went to Sammy's (again). Then, we headed over to Shattered Assembly's band practice! Me, Mrs. Willy, and Kari are the "official mosh-pitters" j/k :P
Anyway, the band rocks and I am excited for them to perform at the Winter Benefit!! I then decided that I wasn't going to leave until today. The Williamson's were kind enough to let us come over for one last get-together. Thanks so much! Then, I went home.

And now I am back in Austin. Thank you to everyone who hung out with me! I had so much fun. Cannot wait until I see everyone again!!! Love you all!

Stay tuned for pictures coming soon to a blog near you!

SURPRISE!!

As you all know, I'M HOME! Yes, I told eveyone I was leaving on Thursday and that you wouldn't see me until Friday,..but...HAHA I lied. Props to Brooke and Mrs. Willy for keeping it a secret! Last week I was talking to Brooke on the phone and I told her that I was going to leave early Thursday morning instead, and she said "Well...why don't you just leave after your last class on Wednesday?" GREAT IDEA!!! It was then decided that we were going to keep it secret since everyone already thought I would see them Friday. My goal was to make it here before church ended. Woohoo! Do you know how hard it was to be like "4 more days!" And then think....not really, actually it's only 2, but I can't tell you! Yeah, it was crazy and I'm very surprised that I kept it in. Well, I left Austin at 3 o'clock this afternoon and arrived around 7:40. I went non-stop. There was no way I was stopping...my heart was beating 100 miles per hour out of excitement! I promise I didn't speed.....not once did I go 10 over the speed limit. I promise I'm still a good driver!...For real. It's so great to be back in Hib-town. And it sure is wonderful seeing everyone :)
Love you all.

So close, but yet so far!

Aloha!
The countdown is slowly coming to an end. In 3 days I will be spending time with my Hib-town buddies! I cannot wait. These past few days have been going incredibly slooooowwww. I just want to be there now! Patience is unfortunately, something I do not have right now.
I hope you guys have a fun homecoming week!
This will probably be my last post before Hibbing, just because I won't have a whole lot to write about between now and then. As said numerous times, I cannot wait to hang out with everyone!!!!!!!! Let's have FUN!! I think it's awesome that we don't need to rely on worldy things like alcohol or drugs in order to have fun. I like being able to just sit around, talk, and laugh with people. Now THAT is fun. I just drank a very huge cappuccino and I could probably write all night, but I will stop now, take a breather and remind myself: only 3 days. Only 3 days. Only 3 days. Craig and Ruth are coming home this weekend too :)
Good luck BLUEJACKETS!! (and N/K)

1 Month

Today is my 1 month anniversary. Yup, that's right! You guessed it. Mr. Invisible and myself have been dating for exactly one month-today! haha, joking of course. Today is my one month mark for living in Austin. In a way the time has went by really fast, but these last two weeks have gone pretty slow waiting to come to Hibbing. That's just because I'm actually looking forward to a certain day, so then the time always seems to go by slower. My goal was to not visit home for at least a month. I think that is a long enough time to get situated with a new life. In 6 days I will be visiting my wonderful home-town! Although Hibbing can be quite boring, I am very proud to be from there and actually miss it (and the people) a whole lot. Austin's wonderful too, but, there's just something about Home Sweet Home. Just thought I'd share that with you and let you know that I am SO EXCITED to see everyone in 6 days!!!!!

Last night Lindsey (fellow youth leader) and 3 of her guy friends and I went to Club 3 Degrees which is a Christian Club located in dowtown Minneapolis. It was my first time going there. It was a lot of fun! Nothing like I expected, but very very fun. There were four different concerts that went on. The first band we watched was Mainstay (which is a band that is just starting to be well-known). One of the guitar players graduated from Austin with the people I went with, so that was their main reason of going, so they could see him. The next concert was a band by the name of "The Wedding." They, with the rest of the bands were also pretty good. The rest of the group didn't think highly of them, but, I liked their music. The third band was..........................*drum roll please*.............JOHN REUBEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is such a funny guy. That's the second time I've seen him in concert. I really like his music and plan on buying his other cd that I don't have. After the concert he stepped on my foot! haha. I just had to add that in there becaue I had a mini conversation with him! He said "Oh I'm sorry did I step on your toes?" And I said "Yes...but that's okay." So I, Amber Shain, talked to John Reuben! woohoo. I know you all must be very excited for me :P Afterwards I was asking myself why I didn't get a picture with him...silly me. That would have been the perfect opportunity. "Yes you did step on my foot, now will you take a picture with me?" haha. His concert was probably my favorite just because he gets the crowd going and is really fun. The last concert was by Falling Up. They are an excellent band. That was also the first time I've heard them play. They were my second favorite. That concluded the concert part. It all ended around 12. We then went to one of their friends house from the cities to have pizza and watch a movie (the last thing I wanted to do at 1 in the morning). Anyway we left there around 2:15ish am. We didn't end up getting to Austin until 4:30 this morning. Boy, was I ever tired. At least I got to sleep in. One of the guys we went with had to work at 8 this morning. But, it was his idea so I don't feel too too bad. Also I thought that I would add that I saw Lauranna Spicer there. She used to live in Chisholm, but moved to the cities a few years ago. I dont know if anyone else knows her, but, I thought that was neat. She didn't see me though. And I'm not sure if she would have remembered who I was.

Here are some PICTURES! Unfortunately, I only took some of John Reuben and Falling Up.

Reuben....what ARE you dippity doin?!

Falling Up. Look at the guitar player in that one! haha

Main singer from Falling Up. Just for you, Brooke Devine!

So Very Thankful

Earlier today I was thinking about friends that I have had who have fallen away from God. Of course, it hurts thinking about how they once were, and knowing that the stage they are in now is not one that's glorifying God. However, it made me come to realize how grateful and thankful I am for certain things. For example: my good Christian friends, my family, and thankful that the Lord is so gracious and no matter how many times we fail, He will always be there to lift us up and let us have infinite chances to a fresh start to life. So often I pray to God for a specific need and when He actually answers it, rarely do I take the time to thank Him for His kindness and His blessings. I have to remember that we can give thanks to Him--even when it's not Thanksgiving! Just thought I'd share that with you all, and leave this Psalm with you.

Psalm 100:

"Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his, we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations."

Maybe take a minute or two today to dwell upon the things God has done in your life, and the things and people He has blessed you with!.......And give thanks with a joyful heart! :)

Memories

I was going through Bonnie's pictures and found this one of my brother Josh and myself at our older brother Brian's wedding. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner here..or else I would have scanned it. Instead, I took a picture of the picture. I hope it turns out semi-clear.
Couldn't pass it up! That's the 2nd time I've seen Josh in a suit. Isn't he cute???
Miss you little bro!
And everyone in Hibbing :(

Mankato

Yesterday I went to visit my dear friend Brianna in Mankato, which is about an hour and 45 minutes away from Austin. I got there around 2. I met Brianna in the lobby of "Gage"..which is the building her dorm is located in. We then went up to her room on the very top floor (12th floor) to meet her roommate Wendy, who is originallly from Bloomington. She is very nice and she and Brianna get along very well. Thankfully, she's not a big partier. Exactly what brianna was praying for! Anyway, we then went to see what Brett was up to in his dorm. After awhile Brett, Brianna, and I went to dinner in the cafeteria. Later Brianna and I went bowling! Then after that we went to one of her friend's she met through Chi Alpha (which is a christian group available at "secular" colleges). Her name is Chelsea (woohoo for Chelsea's!) She is from Iowa. Yay for Iowaians! (My cousin Stacy goes to Iowa State...so I root for Iowaians!) We went there to watch "What Not to Wear." What a great show! I would like to go on it sometime. Who wouldn't want to have a $5,000 shopping spree? Then again, half of the things they buy are $100 and more. Anyway, we saw them transform a lady who looked very masculine (she has big muscles from being a firefighter) into a nice looking gal! That was very fun! We three girls and Brett then went to Applebee's (or in Brett's words "ApplesBees") to enjoy half off apetizers. That basically concluded Friday night.
This morning we slept in pretty late--woohoo!! Then Brianna, Chelsea, Wendy, and I went shopping at the mall. We met Boyum for lunch!!! Since he goes to Gustavus, he only had to drive a short way. It's been months since we've seen Boyum (since he doesn't ever visit Hibbing......). It was very nice to reminisce with him. After that Boyum didn't seem to want to stay and shop (I wonder why?), so the chicas went shopping. I bought tons of perfume and a purse. And a Caribou. (I cannot wait until Hibbing gets one!)
Then we made our way back to MSU where I said my goodbyes and then headed back to SpamTown. I'm very happy to say that the directions brought me there and back without getting lost! I did miss one turn when I was in Mankato, but it wasn't bad enough to get me lost. It was great spending time with Brianna and her friends at MSU. Just thought I'd update about her since she doesn't have a blog. Things are going well for her. She has met a lot of nice people and is already involved in a lot of christian activites going on at her college. Her roommate is even intereseted in going to Chi Alpha sometime! So, that's pretty sweet. Here is a picture of her bowling yesterday(notice that the school name/mascot is in the picture with her)

Off Again

Hey Everyone!! Another weekend I am going out of town. Yesterday I decided to call up Brianna and ask if I could come visit her for the weekend--good thing she just happpened not to have anything planned! So shortly I'm headed to Mankato. This will be the first time ever where I have to fully rely on my directions because i have NO CLUE where I'm going! I hope map quest is reliable enough! Anyway, I'll spend time with her today and tomorrow then I'm going to leave tomorrow night so I can actually go to a Sunday morning service here for once. Then, Sunday night I am going to a Bible study for younger adult women. That should be interesting.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!
Good luck Bluejacket football!

2 WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear directions,
Please get me there!

The Scavenger Hunt

Tonight instead of having a normal youth group service, we had our "7th Annual Video Scavenger Hunt." We split up into 9 teams and had to go around town and do crazy stuff for points! Each team had to video tape each thing they did to prove that it was done. Pastor Corey gave us a list of different things we could do. Each thing was worth a certain number of points, and obviously, the team with the most points at the end won. And the thing is...we only had 45 minutes before our team had to be back at the church...which really, wasn't a lot of time. So anyway, i was on the smallest team. There were 3 girls including me and another leader that was driving and doing the video taping.
I will list the things we did to get points...and I will then tell you some of the other crazy things teams did to get points! We started off by going to Perkins and video taping a group of three eating. We asked 3 elderly ladies if we could tape them eating and they were all for it! They were so nice. They were offering us food and laughing....we were very happy that they were so into it! Then one of the ladies said on the tape "This team's going to win!!" Anyway, after that another task that we could do was ask the manager to make us a free piece of toast. He and all the other employees were so helpful! He kindly made us a piece of toast. Then, we had 3 of the employees play leap frog!! It was hilarious. At first they were hesitant but after a couple minutes of begging, they decided they would......IF we did it first. haha. So after we showed them how it was done, we got them on tape, said our thank yous, and quickly ventured out to do our next task. Another thing on the list was to tape someone in a blue car..and Sarah, the leader who was driving our team happened to have a blue car!! So we asked a complete stranger if he would sit in the driver's seat so we could tape him. Once again, he was kind enough to do it. We then headed to "HyVee"...which is a grocery store here (for those of you who don't know) and we had to do a cheer infront of the store. We then asked one of the employees if we could race him...since that was another thing on the list. Another thing on the list was to try to get into a movie ...but, the manager of the movie theater said it was illegal, so they gave us free popcorn instead...which was nice! Then, we stepped up to the big points! One thing we could do for 300 points was to go to the news station here and do a "fake" broadcasting! Luckily, Sarah used to work there and she had connections! It was soooooooooo coool! We actually got to sit in the chairs behind the news desk and the lady was nice enough to set up the TV that shows the broadcasters what to say. We read todays weather forecast..'twas fun! We obviously weren't on the real news, but, we did get it on tape and no other groups did that task! WOOHOO. Oh yeah, how could I forget. Another thing we did was everyone from your team had to dunk their head (down to their chin) into water. We happened to be close to Holiday Inn, so we asked the lady at the front desk if we could quickly dunk our heads in the pool. She didn't care, so we did. Corey said our group dunked our heads in the farthest. He was very impressed. That basically took up all the time we had. In between each thing we asked people questions like "Do you know Chris Gogeleski?" (he's a youth leader at our church) and "Have you eaten SPAM today?" haha... Needless to say it was super fun and it was a great way to get newcomers involved! We then went back to the church (we were a minute late, so we got 40 points deducted....bummer) to have a pizza party and to watch the videos. On the way back to the church we were stuck behind a really slow van so we were riding their tail the whole time......and....when they turned the corner, the driver kind of gave us the finger!! Wups. Good thing we didn't get that on tape. Our team ended up getting 5th place out of nine teams. People did crazy stuff for points! Some teams had people shave their eyebrows for 300 points, and went in dumpsters....and other crazy stuff. And the people who did shave their eyebrows (eyebrow I should say) didn't even get first place! So now, they have to live in embarassment until ....hopefully something grows back! haha. Anyway, I don't know why they did because the winning team got a trophy with a person doing a hand stand on a pig......hahahaha I guess it's an inside joke with this youth group. Well that's all I have to say....I hope everyone made it this far...i know it's a long one!

I love you all!!! 16 days!!!

Just a Thought

Well, it's 1:17 am and I am not even close to being
tired. I just drank a whole cup of coffee and sleep is not an option right now. Why did I drink a cup of coffee at 12:30 in the morning? My aunt, cousin, and I were sitting around talking and decided to have a cup. Well, luckily for them they were able to fall asleep. Who knows what time I'll be snoozin...I'll give it a good couple hours.

These past two months have been birthday galore! Today is Opey's birthday! 23rd I think...sorry if I am wrong. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I don't think you'll be reading this, but, hope all goes well and have a fun day--relax since you don't have school and enjoy yourself :D

Please let me know if there's anything I can be praying for anyone about. I enjoy praying for people. You can either comment on here or email me. If you don't want to say what it is, you can put "private" or put it under anonymous.
It doesn't matter..whatever you feel like doing. Never underestimate the power of prayer!

I'll end my post with a thought for the day.
Thought of the day:
Do animals have a sense of humor? Seriously....I've been wondering if animals find things funny. I mean, how would anyone know? Obviously, we've never heard an animal laugh...maybe a parrot, but other than that, no they usually don't! Just curious.
Then again...it is late (or early). Let me know what you think!

Tip of the day:
Don't drink coffee right before bed.

Have a great day everyone!!

Greetings from the Hawkeye state!

Greetings to my Hib-town friends! This weekend my aunt and I are visiting my cousin in Ames Iowa. Today we went to Des Moines and did some shopping (imagine that!), then we came back to the apartment for a little bit, then Bonnie and I dropped my cousin and her boyfriend off at the ISU football game, then realized we were locked out of the house until 9:30 tonight! (It was around 4 when we dropped them off) So, we had to think of things to do until then. We did some more shopping at the mall in town, then went to Target, DQ, then by the time we were done with that we headed to the movie theater to watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith. I regret seeing it. It's a stupid movie! Most people say it's good, but, i found no enjoyment in it. I don't recommend it!! After the movie we still had time to spare, so we headed over to good ol Wally World (some things never change :P) then finally we were able to get back into the apartment. Stacy fell asleep already, so, my aunt and I are going to watch Funniest home videos. Hope everyone's having a great weekend! Drive safely and always buckle up! I cannot wait to see everyone in 19 days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love, Amber
I will post some weekend pictures on Tuesday...since I don't have school Monday or Tuesday! YAY!
Note to Hibbingites: ENJOY YOUR LAST WEEKEND OF STAYING OUT LATE! ..TIME FOR SCHOOL! :)
Always remember: school is cool!

September Birthday

Well, I have been sitting on my computer bored and all of a sudden I realize that tomorrow (well...15 minutes from now) is another very special day. CHELSEA IS ENTERING ADULTHOOD! So I would like to say HAPPY 18TH BIRTHDAY TO CHELSEA! I doubt you'll be reading this, but hope you have a fun-filled day! Enjoy adulthood :)

God Opens Doors

Hello hello hello! Hope you all are having a wonderful day! Last night was my 2nd week of youth group in Austin. I have yet to go to a Sunday morning service. Last weekend I was in the cities, so I wasn't able to go to this church on Sunday, nor will I be able to this Sunday because I will be in Iowa. I am loooking forward to meeting Pastor Aaron's sister and brother-in-law...someday...hopefully soon! I am starting to get introduced to a lot of the other leaders here and I am also starting to feel less shy and comfortable around everyone--thank goodness! Yesterday Angie asked me if I would be interested in helping out with a junior high girls cell group! They meet once a week at another leaders house. Today we are all going to watch one of the girls' volleyball games. I am really looking forward to it! Also, she was telling me about a new Bible study that they are doing for younger adult women. I can't remember what book it is based off of, but, I am also going to be a part of that. So now at least I am involved with two things! I am excited to start going to more church activities because then I won't be sitting around the house all day wondering what to do. Well, just thought I'd share that God is good and somtimes does things when you least expect it!
Take care ya'll (I've picked up a southern accent.......since I kind of am far south........J/K)!

I will see everyone on Sept. 23rd! :)
I love you all!
